Things to do in Southend, Leigh and Shoeburyness

Build a day around the pier, a different stretch of coast, Prittlewell history or a local performance, with room for a meal along the way.

Make the pier part of a seafront day

A visit to Southend Pier takes you away from the roads and out over the estuary. Choose between the railway and a walk according to your plans, then leave time to enjoy the view rather than treating the end as a box to tick. The pier's current visitor information is the place to check access and operating details.

Back on shore, combine one attraction with a meal or a wander along Marine Parade. That usually makes a more comfortable outing than trying to fit every seafront venue into the same afternoon.

Try a different stretch of the coast

Chalkwell and Thorpe Bay offer alternatives to the central seafront, while Shoebury Common and East Beach give you another reason to head east. Pick a beach and its nearby facilities as your destination, especially if you have children, bags or a picnic with you.

A promenade walk can be enough of an outing in its own right. Check the weather, tide and local signs, stay on suitable routes and take advice about water access seriously. The visitor travel page helps you match the beach you want with an appropriate station or parking location.

Spend time around Old Leigh

Old Leigh is a good choice when you want waterfront character rather than a ride-filled day out. Look at the boats and working surroundings, take a slow walk through the older streets, then choose a cafe or pub for a pause. Respect the practical needs of the people working around the waterfront.

You can combine it with independent shopping above the hill, but it is equally reasonable to keep the visit to one area. A smaller plan gives you time to notice the details that make Leigh different from the central seafront.

Follow the history into Priory Park

Priory Park combines open space with the surviving buildings of Prittlewell Priory. It suits a visit where some people want a garden walk and others are interested in local history. Plan museum access using the priory's own visitor information, then enjoy the park around it.

For a longer theme, use the Prittlewell Heritage Trail. Its route links the museums and civic landmarks on Victoria Avenue with quieter gardens and the older settlement. Follow the published route and choose the portions that suit the time and energy you have.

Leave room for an evening out

Cliffs Pavilion on Station Road in Westcliff brings theatre, comedy and live music to the coast. Choose a performance from its current programme, then plan food and travel around the venue rather than assuming it is beside the central pier attractions. For a different kind of creative outing, look at Metal Southend's programme at Chalkwell Hall.

Our community and leisure listings bring together different kinds of venues. Contact an organiser about access, group size or equipment when those details matter; a little planning helps everyone spend the visit enjoying the event.
